Public Outreach

Action taken by supporters is vital in tackling slavery today. Raising awareness and understanding of slavery amongst the general public is an essential part of our work in order to promote the effective role each person can play, and equip individuals with the information they need to take action.

Public support both for the eradication of slavery worldwide and for our specific campaign objectives is crucial in maximising our ability to pressure and persuade decision-makers, and achieve changes to policies and laws which can make a significant contribution towards the eradication of slavery. By expressing concerns to those in power, public action can provide a voice in support of the millions of men, women and children in slavery worldwide who are denied theirs.

Anti-Slavery International mobilises public opinion on slavery issues through giving talks and workshops, running information stalls at a range of events and festivals, and organising public meetings and other events. These activities outreach to a wide audience including university students, community groups, faith groups, schools, museums & libraries, and the public at large, encouraging people to organise awareness raising activities in their communities and get involved with our campaigns.

The abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in 1807 was achieved by a mass movement that brought together many different sections of society, including enslaved Africans who resisted and rebelled against slavery, and anti-slavery campaigners both black and white, including many hundreds of thousands of ordinary members of the public. Their efforts can inspire and inform our work today to widen the Anti-Slavery coalition and create momentum for change.

If you are interested in raising awareness and campaigning against slavery in your area, or would like to invite a speaker from Anti-Slavery International, please contact i.hasnain@antislavery.org.
