Why support the Niger Schools Project?Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, with over 60% of the population living on less than one dollar a day. Amidst this poverty, those with slave status are among those most marginalised and socially excluded in the country. The Niger Schools Project takes place in the remote Tahoua region on the edge of the desert and an area where many people are in slavery.
In six newly built schools the children of slaves will for the first time have the opportunity to gain an education. Just as importantly the children will learn alongside the children of former masters. By studying together the students will take the first steps to overcome ingrained discrimination that pervades their society. As well as learning the three Rs their curriculum will emphasises equality and human rights. This ground breaking project aims to end the suffering and humiliation of children in Niger which could be replicated across the world.

Join a schools linking project between Niger and UKIf you are a parent or a teacher who would like to encourage your child or students to do more, Anti-Slavery International facilitates a school linking programme between the Niger schools and UK schools. Children in both countries will carry out joint project work and communicate with each other. This is important in enhancing children’s curriculum learning and increasing their understanding of the causes and consequences of slavery and links to poverty, discrimination the Millennium Development Goals. Schools linking will also reinforce the fact that ALL children across the world should have the same rights applied to them and empower students to take action when rights are denied to others.. Does my money really go on the gift I have chosen? All the gifts listed in our online Gift Shop have been regularly provided by Anti Slavery International since the Niger Schools Project was launched in 2008.To make best use of your donations, we give classroom equipment, livestock, training and support services according to where the need is greatest, taking into account local conditions and the wishes of the recipients where possible. We guarantee to use your donation in the most effective way to best help former slaves receive quality education and live a vastly improved life.
What percent of my donation goes directly to recipients? With the Niger Schools Appeal, none of your money goes on administration or any other processing fee. As the money is treated specifically as “restricted funds”, it goes directly to our work on the Niger Schools Project.
You can find out more about how we spend your money in our annual review by email request
support@antislavery.orgCan you tell me which school has received my gift?Yes! Unlike some charities, we can disclose the exact locations of where your gift has been provided, and also provide a range of case studies available to show how the project has change children's lives since its launch. Should you wish to visit your school as part of a team or even individually this is also possible, and all enquiries should be directed towards the Africa Programme Co-ordinator Romana Cacchioli at
r.cacchioli@antislavery.orgHow are the animals cared for? Owning livestock is a means of providing a living for many people in the developing world. Consequently, making sure the animal is well cared for is a priority for people who own them. The recipients of livestock receive training in animal husbandry and local veterinary care is usually available. It is quite common for the animal to enjoy a better quality of life than its owner.
What is Gift Aid and who is eligible for it?Gift aid is a way of reclaiming up to 28% of the donation in tax from HMRC Revenues and Customs which has already been paid by the giver. For a donation to quality for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer. You must pay enough income tax or capital gains tax to at least equal the amount of tax that Antislavery International will claim on your donations made in that tax year. A Tax year runs from 6 April; to the following 5 April. This means that if you have given a donation of £100, you will need to have paid £25 tax.
Which donations are NOT eligible for Gift Aid? The following criteria apply for Gift Aid Declarations as set by the Inland Revenue:
• You can only make a Gift Aid declaration on your own donation.
• You cannot make a Gift Aid declaration on behalf of someone else, even if they are themselves a UK taxpayer
• The only way around this is to ask each person to complete a declaration on the amount they have donated. We can supply collection envelopes, which do make provision for Gift Aid
Can I cancel my Gift Aid Declaration? You are perfectly entitled to cancel your declaration at any time if you wish. Please let us know if you no longer pay sufficient tax to cover the tax that we reclaim. The cancellation will take effect once we notification by you. If you are no longer eligible to give Gist Aid then please let us know at
